The 5 must sees in the old city of Angoulême :

    • The ramparts: The city of Angoulême has been protected by ramparts since the Lower Roman Empire. Rebuilt and enlarged in the Middle Ages, reinforced in the 16th century and then rendered useless, they were levelled to allow the city of Angoulême to extend beyond its historical limits. Today they offer superb views of the valley and the Charente
    • The Cathedral of Saint Pierre d' Angoulême and its exceptional and very sculpted facade, which constitutes the centrepiece of the monument around the theme of the Last Judgement.
    • The town hall: former castle of Angoulême which was transformed into a town hall from 1858 to 1869 by the famous french architect Paul Abadie Jr., who kept 2 towers of the ancient medieval castle, including the polygonal keep built by the Lusignan in the XIIIth and XIVth centuries.
    • Painted walls: The circuit of painted walls in Angoulême is a route of frescoes that echo the theme of the comic strip in the city. Today, there are more than twenty of them, spread over the city's neighbourhoods.
    • Les Halles d' Angoulême, which we owe to the architect Edouard Warin; they lay on the plateau on the site of a former castle, now disappeared, built by the French Kings to curb the ambitions of proud local lords.
